FRANZ S. GEBHARDT-WESTERBUCHBERG (1895–1969)
Portrait of a painter's life

02.03. – 09.06.2024

Franz S. Gebhardt-Westerbuchberg worked for many years as a painter and farmer on a farm above Lake Chiemsee from 1934 onwards. It was not until 1952 that he was able to concentrate exclusively on painting. In addition to a large number of landscapes, still lifes and biblical histories presented in the exhibition, Gebhardt Westerbuchberg created a large number of self-portraits. They form the framework of this exhibition, which, with a few exceptions, draws on works from Joseph Hierling's collection. Like hardly any other contemporary of the "lost generation", Gebhardt-Westerbuchberg dealt with his own appearance so intensively and relentlessly in his self-portraits. The Tyll cycle painted in the years after the Second World War will also be on display.
