The »Samselsurium« exhibition takes you into the world of Paul Maar (born 1937), one of the most popular and successful German authors of books for children and young people, who is not only the author but also the illustrator of many of his books. Popular characters from his books have now been brought together in the Buchheim Museum. First and foremost is Sams, who was created around 50 years ago. With his bizarre outfit, cheekiness, rebelliousness and voraciousness, he continues to delight children all over the world to this day. Sams has brought along his human father, Mr. Taschenbier, whom he adopted, as well as Mrs. Rotkohl and Mr. Mon and his parrot. Lippel, who loves to dream, has also come along, as have the troll Tojok, Deldok from the Opodeldoks and the little kangaroo. They and many others are represented in original illustrations by Paul Maar.

Visitors can also marvel at the wishing machine and the umbrella generator as well as a puppet stage from the Augsburger Puppenkiste with a scene based on Paul Maar‘s play »The Little Kangaroo and the Scaredy Cat«. Colourful giant dragons hovering above the heads of visitors are painted with motifs by Paul Maar.

Posters displayed in the gallery show Paul Maar as an author of plays and scripts. A selection of his books, which have been translated into numerous languages, documents their worldwide success.
