Lothar-Günther and Diethild Buchheim lived and worked in their villa at Johann-Biersack-Straße 23 in Feldafing for more than five decades. The historic building had three floors and an extension, as well as several sheds in the garden; over twenty rooms formed a multifaceted structure. From the outset, the Buchheims designed their house as a personal Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art. Artistic works, objects and found items hung densely on the walls or were placed in small arrangements on shelves, tables and window sills. Even doors, panelling and fixtures were painted or covered with stickers. The result was a multi-layered ambience that had developed over decades and was reminiscent of a private cabinet of curiosities.

After Lothar-Günther Buchheim's death in 2007, Diethild Buchheim lived in the house alone. When she also passed away in 2014, everything remained unchanged for several months, as if everyday life had only withdrawn for a moment. It was during this phase that Florian Holzherr created his photographic documentation. His photographs preserve the character of the rooms while also drawing attention to the multitude of details that shaped the house. The photographs show the house shortly before its demise and at the same time allow something of its special atmosphere to be felt.

The Buchheim House was demolished in 2017. The library, archive, collections and artistically designed components were salvaged and transferred to the Buchheim Museum. Since 2018, selected rooms and ensembles have been rebuilt in the basement of the museum.
